AUDITION INFORMATION
2024-2025

ABOUT THE MODERN BAND PROGRAM...
The MtH Modern Band is an ensembles in which students learn concrete, intellectual knowledge, and the physical skills and disciplines necessary to perform on a musical instrument, as well as an appreciation for music, musicianship, and the language of popular music, including rock, pop, blues, R&B, jazz, country, and everything in between.  Unlike other academic courses, in the Modern Band Program the quality of the end product and other students' educational experiences depend on the combined efforts of the ensemble.  This ensemble is open to any Mt. Hebron musicians that would like to experience the joy of performing live. We are particualrly interested in Alto Sax, Tenor Sax,  Baritone Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Piano (Synthesizer), Bass (Acoustic/Electirc), Drum Set, Vibraphone, Auxiliary Percussion, and Vocalists).  This ensemble will work to prepare at least two concerts a year, develop skills in listening, reading, and improvisation, and perform music in a variety of modern styles (including but not limited to swing, modern jazz, funk, rock, and pop).

We are also looking for students that would be interested in
the production/technical side of the ensemble experience, including audio engineers and sound designers.

We will still work to provide a jazz experience for interested students, but will supplement this experience with more contemporary music.

Auditions are held in the fall of each year.  QUESTIONS?  Please contact Mr. Fischer (Band Director) at
[email protected] for more information.

Modern Band

The MtH Modern Band is an extra-curricular ensemble open to students in grades 9 - 12 that explores standard and contemporary "commercial" music.  This group performs multiple concerts throughout the year, performing music at an advanced grade level of difficulty.
Jazz Combo

The MtH Jazz Combo will be a subset from the MtH Modern Band.  This ensemble focuses on improvisational jazz in a chamber ensemble setting.  The instrumentation changes from year to year.   This group performs along with the Modern Band but is also in demand for performances throughout the extended community.

HOW TO AUDITION...
Step #1:  Review the Events Calendar (Modern Band) that outlines all rehearsals/performance for the year.  Please be sure you are able to make a full and active commitment to the program before submitting an audition.  The Modern Band rehearses weekly and performs throughout the year.  Unlike other classes in which one’s presence affects only him/herself, attendance profoundly affects the entire musical group.  For this reason, attendance at ALL rehearsals and performances is EXPECTED.

Step #2:  Print, fill out, sign, and return the Registration/Permission Form indicating your interest in participating.  This form is due to Mr. Fischer in the band room no later than Friday, September 6, 2024.

Step #3:  Prepare the appropriate audition materials (see bellow) and submit a video demonstrating your abilities.  Audition videos are due no later than Friday, September 27, 2024 and should be emailed to Mr. Fischer at [email protected].

Step #4:  Selected students will be notified shortly following the submission deadline and asked to complete a Modern Band Membership Agreement and Participation Fees Form before beginning rehearsals.

NOTE: There has been a lot of student interest over the years.  Selection to the MtH Modern Band is by competitive audition.  If there is enough student interest we will consider the creation of a second ensemble.  If you are not selected for the MtH Modern Band, we welcome your participation in the second ensemble if it runs.  All students (regardless of ability or experience) are welcome in this ensemble.
