TEAM

The Band Leadership Team (BLT) is designed to create opportunities for student leadership that help build a stronger and more student centered band program.  Each year students manage various aspects of the band program, thus placing ownership for the program’s success in the hands of those that will benefit most from their efforts.  The Band Leadership Team leads by example and exemplifies the positive attitude, strong work ethic, and spirit of the Mt. Hebron Band Program and Marching Unit.

Leadership is the Privilege
to have the Responsibility to direct the actions of others
in carrying out the purpose of the organization,
at varying levels of authority
with accountability for both failed and successful endeavors.

QUALITIES oF a GREAT LEADER!

LEAD, FOLLOW, OR GET OUT OF THE WAY!!

Be confident in yourself

  • If you have hang ups or fears, face them up front and head on.
  • Be honest with yourself and with others

Be imaginative
  • Never be ordinary or predictable.
  • Make everything a new adventure
  • Problem solve in new ways
  • Don’t be afraid of being laughed at
  • Plan ahead for everything

Respect yourself and others
  • Always see things from the other point of view as well as your own
  • Treat others as you would like to be treated
  • Never walk ahead of or behind your peers…walk alongside them
  • Make it a point to know all the members of your group.  Draw them to you by making them feel important
  • Use their first name…often

Know the area/section in which you lead
  • Be prepared
  • Be knowledgeable
  • Plan your rehearsal times.  Know what you need to get done and get it done.
  • Always have a plan B.

Have great communication skills
  • Half of communicating is listening and hearing
  • Teach communication by example

Have a sense of humor
  • Put everything in perspective.  Laughter is often the best cure-all in the world
  • Feel free to laugh at yourself from time to time
  • Anything that is fun is never referred to as work
  • Turn life and all of its challenges into fun

Your leadership is not something that can be forced on other people.  Bring to your job knowledge, enthusiasm, great ideas, and a desire to get things done.  Then one day you’ll look around and realize that people are following along wanting to be a part of your plan, asking how you do it.
