ABOUT THE JAZZ PROGRAM...
The MtH Jazz Ensemble(s) and Jazz Combo are ensembles in which students learn concrete, intellectual knowledge, and the physical skills and disciplines necessary to perform on a musical instrument, as well as an appreciation for music, musicianship, and the language of jazz. Unlike other academic courses, in the Jazz Program the quality of the end product and other students' educational experiences depend on the combined efforts of the ensemble. These ensembles are comprised of the traditional jazz instrumentation (Alto - Tenor - Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drum Set, Vibraphone, Auxiliary Percussion, Vocalist). All ensembles work to prepare at least two concerts a year, develop skills in jazz improvisation, and perform music in a variety of modern styles (including but not limited to swing, modern jazz, funk, rock, and pop).

HOW TO AUDITION...
Step #1: Review the Events Calendar (Jazz) that outlines all rehearsals/performance for the year. Please be sure you are able to make a full and active commitment to the program before submitting an audition. The Jazz Ensemble rehearses weekly and performs throughout the year. Unlike other classes in which one’s presence affects only him/herself, attendance profoundly affects the entire musical group. For this reason, attendance at ALL rehearsals and performances is EXPECTED.
Step #2: Print, fill out, sign, and return the Registration/Permission Form indicating your interest in participating in jazz. This form is due to Mr. Fischer in the band room no later than Friday, September 8, 2023.
Step #3: Prepare the appropriate audition materials (see bellow) and submit a video demonstrating your abilities. Audition videos are due no later than Friday, September 22, 2023 and should be emailed to Mr. Fischer at joe_fischer@hcpss.org.
Step #4: Selected students will be notified shortly following the submission deadline and asked to complete a Jazz Membership Agreement and Participation Fees Form before beginning rehearsals.
NOTE: There has been a lot of student interest in MtH jazz over the years. Selection to the MtH Jazz Ensemble is by competitive audition. If there is enough student interest we will consider the creation of a second jazz ensemble (MtH Jazz Band). If you are not selected for the MtH Jazz Ensemble, we welcome your participation in the MtH Jazz Band. All students (regardless of ability or experience) are welcome in this ensemble.
