About Us
So, you’re thinking about joining Tri-M Music Honor Society? Here’s some information about what it means to be a “Tri-M” at Hebron and how to apply.
What is Tri-M Music Honor Society?
Tri-M Music Honor Society, formerly known as Modern Music Masters, is an American high school and middle school music honor society. A program of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), it is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements and to provide leadership and service opportunities to young musicians. There are approximately 6200 participating chapters in several countries, each of which is run by the students but supervised by an advisor or sponsor.
Why should I join Tri-M? What are the eligibility requirements?
Being invited to join Tri-M is a huge honor! As you know, it is an international honor society, and it is made up of the best-of-the-best music students who share a common goal: to strengthen and grow the music community of their schools. Throughout the year, members of Tri-M (known as “Tri-Ms”) take part in service projects to help their music teachers and to strengthen ties with their elementary and middle school feeders. When we all come together to do good for our community, we all shine! Upon graduation, all “Tri-Ms” receive pink cords that display their commitment and service to the Mt. Hebron Music Department and the Tri-M Music Honor Society.
In order to apply for Tri-M, you must be enrolled in a music class at Mt. Hebron HS for the 2023-2024 school year.
Is Tri-M a big commitment?
It depends who you ask. Some “Tri-Ms” think the membership requirements are tough; others think they’re less difficult. However you slice it, being a member of Tri-M is all about thoughtful planning. Once a month, Mt. Hebron Tri-M holds meetings in the Choir Room to keep all members on the same page. They discuss upcoming events and other important chapter information. Attendance at these meetings is mandatory. Each year, you may miss two meetings for any reason. If you miss more than two, you will be excused from the honor society.
Each “Tri-M” completes SIX total Service Experiences. These experiences are music-related and strengthen our music community. For example, a “Tri-M” could contact their elementary school music teacher and teach lessons to younger students after school. A “Tri-M” could also volunteer to usher at concerts at Hebron. There are many county-wide and school-wide music events that occur in our auditorium each year, and “Tri-Ms” can be seen working the lights, handing out programs, and helping guests find their way through our music wing. “Tri-Ms” are also involved in preparing the stage for concerts and striking the stage when concerts have ended.
How do I submit a Service Experience?
Here at Hebron, we submit our Service Experiences digitally. Unlike other honor societies that use pesky hardcopies, we have no cumbersome tracking sheets to manage. Instead, once you complete a Service Experience, you visit our Service Experience Google Submission Form and input your information. Each year, you complete SIX Service Experiences: ONE per quarter and TWO additional Supplemental Service Experiences that can be completed at any time. Many “Tri-Ms” go above-and-beyond and complete more. I’m sure you’re not surprised, though: Tri-M Music Honor Society members are committed to making a difference in our community.
